This silhouette is the type known as cut, meaning that it is cut from black paper and then pasted to the background. This pretty woman was a member of the Root family of Northport Long Island and was purchased from a descendant. The frame is Victorian and the mat appears to be cut and colored by hand. Some might want to remat it professionally, by I thought the existing and contemporaneous mat to have a great deal of charm. Dimensions are 9 inches by 8 inches.

This silhouette is the type known as cut, meaning that it is cut from black paper and then pasted to the background. This bearded fellow is William Root, a Long Islander. It is dated 1881 and was purchased from a descendant. I believe the frame is original. A piece of paper on the back notes: William Roote, my grandfather, 1881. Dimensions 9 inches by 8 inches
