Very Early Sampler Circa 1600's
This sampler is among the earliest known. the animal and floral design motifs all come from J.Sibmacher's book, Newes Modelbuch on Kuppfer Gemacht with was published within 60 years after Gutenberg invented the printing press. The stitch patterns which comprise about a quarter of the design are Elizabethan. Many of the samplers were done in long bands with the stitches running across the narrow part. This is unusual since the pattern was done across the ong dimension. Probably silk on linen, some loss at the edges and some stitch weakness along the center line. Please feel free to inquiry for more detail about this rare peice.
